R. Guy Erwin, Ph.D.  Theologian in Residence

Guy Erwin serves St. Matthew’s part-time as "theologian in residence," which means that he helps the congregation with worship renewal and educational programs, advises the church council and the pastor, and works with the staff in organizing worship. He also occasionally preaches or presides at worship services. In his full-time career, Dr. Erwin is the Gerhard & Olga Belgum Professor of Lutheran Confessional Theology at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. At CLU, he teaches the history of Christianity (particularly the Reformation era), the history of Germany and Scandinavia, and courses in theology and worship. He lives in Sherman Oaks, and has been a member of St. Matthew’s since 2001.

Born in Oklahoma and a member of the Osage Tribe of Indians, Erwin was educated at Harvard and Yale and spent several years of graduate study at German universities. He has spoken and published widely on historic and modern Lutheranism, and is very active as a volunteer leader at the national level of the ELCA. In 2009, he will be one of our Southwest California Synod’s voting members at the ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Minneapolis. Internationally, he represents the ELCA on the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches, and represents North America’s Lutherans in the planning for a world consultation on Lutheran education to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in January of 2010.
